Supervisor: Fleet Maintenance/Solid Waste Superintendent
Supervises: Mechanic III, Mechanic II, Mechanic I
Grade: 110/ Starting at $19.009 per hour
Class Characteristics: Under general administrative direction, supervises and directs the repair and body shop operations of the Central Garage; perform duties as a mechanic; performs related work as required.
General Duties and Responsibilities: Assists in planning, assigning and scheduling the work of mechanics while assisting in completing the work activities. Operates test equipment and diagnosis vehicle problems. Maintains service manuals, training and test equipment manual updates. Determines needed repairs to vehicles and equipment, makes specific assignments and prepares work orders. Checks work in progress and upon completion. Conducts road tests of vehicles to ensure quality of work. Assists in preparing and directing preventive maintenance program for all city vehicles and equipment. Assists in ensuring preparation and maintenance of records for vehicles and equipment. Ensures adequate inventory of parts, fuels, oils, hydraulic fluids, antifreeze and tires. Recommends type, quantity and quality of materials and/or parts to be used. Advises on type, quantity and quality of materials and/or parts to be used. Ensures adequate inventory of tools used by mechanics and determines tools needed to perform their work. Completes time sheets and maintains personnel files on division employees. Performs employee evaluations and conducts interviews with employees. Makes yearly budget recommendations, assists with yearly inventory, prepares work orders and written reports as required.
Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by five (5) years work experience in mechanics with one (1) year supervisory experience.
Certification/Licensing Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid commercial drivers’ license (CDL) as a condition of continued employment in the class. Must possess A.S.E. automotive certification. Graduation from vocational school with mechanical specialization is preferred, but not required.
Availability: Must be available for callouts and emergencies.
Overtime Provision: Non-exempt.
