Central Park: Central Park is the largest park in the park system and is considered the ‘Crown Jewel’.  The park consists of forty-seven acres and was sold to the City of Ashland in 1900 by the Kentucky Iron Coal and Manufacturing Company for the sum of $32,500.  Until August 1923, the primary activity in the park was a horseracing track.

The park is located between 17^th and 22^nd Streets and Central and Lexington Avenues.

There are over 1100 trees in Central Park with each identified and located on maps of the park.  Following is a listing of some facilities available:

Dawson Park and Municipal Pool: This park is located on Central Avenue between 6^th and 7^th Streets.  The park has playground equipment, a basketball court and a volleyball court.

 

The pool is a modern pool with a water slide and a diving board.  There is playground equipment and a basketball court in the pool area.  A concession stand is operated when the pool is open.  Admission to the pool is $2.00 for school age and $3.00 for adults.  The pool operates from Memorial Day until Labor Day when school is not is session.  Season passes may be purchased for the pool and pool rental is available.  Call the Parks & Recreation  office for details.

 

Central Bark at Wendell Banks Southside: Originally Southside Park, the 5.25 acres housed a pool, then turned ball field, and is now the home of the official city dog park. Located in the lower area of Ballard Street off Blackburn Avenue. 

 

Oliverio Park: This park, once known as Clyffeside Park, is located between 39^th and 41^st Streets along Winchester Avenue.  The park has playground equipment, picnic shelters and restrooms.  Additionally, two little league fields are located on the front portion of the park beside the Ashland Water Plant.

 

Joseph P. Harris Park: This is a new park located on the old railroad property that ran through the middle of town.  The park is long but not very wide and runs from 29^th Street east to Winchester Avenue.  The park has a fountain, sidewalks and benches.

 

Spring Park: This is a small undeveloped park alongside 29^th Street near Newman.

 

Riverfront Park: Located on the riverfront at 15^th Street as this park has the Ashland Boat Ramp.  It also has an outdoor stage where Summer Motion concerts are held each 4^th of July week.  These concerts draw crowds of over 30,000.  The annual fireworks are also held at Riverfront, which is the largest fireworks display in this area of the country.
