Central Bark Grand Opening

Information For

The Mayor and Commissioners are paw-sitivley pleased to open Central Bark at Wendell Banks Southside, the official city dog park!

Nestled in the lower area of Ballard Street off Blackburn Avenue, sits the South Side Park. Originally the 5.25 acres housed a pool, then turned ball field, and as of today becomes the new home of the official city dog park.

The massive lawn has been dived into two sections. One side welcomes dogs 30 pounds and over while the other is scaled for pups under 30 pounds. Toys have been added for training and plenty of fenced yards for free play and running.  After a fun-filled playtime, each side is equipped with a special paw-printed water fountain for thirsty canines. Lining the outskirts of the field are trash receptacles, benches, and mutt mitts while picnic tables and additional benches adorn the outer perimeter.

The transformation has been in the works for the past few months. Both dugouts received a new metal roof and will serve as a sheltered seating area in each section of the park. The restroom facilities also sport the new covering along with other improvements inside. While they are still winterized for the season, they will be ready to accommodate guests in the spring!

Concrete sidewalks were added to connect the parking area to the restrooms and entrances of the park. Fencing was added to create the separation from large and small dogs as well as a double-entry gate for safety. A previous issue at the field had been runoff from the hillside causing water to pool. The Parks and Rec staff worked to dig out and sure-up the ditch line to prevent further problems.

More improvements will be coming in the spring, including bench swings, a refresh to the playground and basketball court, and more! Central Bark will be open year-round from dawn to dusk.
