2023 Repair Affair

Information For

Repair Affair
Repair Affair mobilizes resources and volunteers to repair homes owned by low-income homeowners who are elderly or disabled. The focus of Repair Affair is on home safety, security, weatherizing, and neighborhood stability.  Repair Affair is not a decorating, remodeling, or emergency repair program.  By volunteering, you will be making a real, immediate impact on the life of someone who needs help. Volunteer teams are matched with homes in need based on the size and skills of the team.  Every skill level is needed. If you have a team of twenty or are a team of one - every volunteer is welcomed and needed!

Repairs include:
  • wheelchair ramps
  • handrails
  • porch/deck repair
    steps
  • door and window repair
  • minor roof repair
  • interior and exterior painting
  • yard work and clean-up
Repair Affair recipients must:
  • Own and reside in the home
  • Be at least 60 years old or certified as disabled
  • Be of low income (50% of area median income or less)
  • Live in the city limits of Ashland

Repair Affair is not yet able to reach all the homeowners who need help, but we seek to involve new teams of volunteers each year. Some teams are very skilled at home repairs. Others may have no experience at all. That's okay - we will match your team to an appropriate home.  And even if you can't swing a hammer, there are many other volunteer opportunities available, including preparing lunch, being a runner, etc. We have volunteers from churches, corporations, agencies, social clubs, workplace teams, school groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, etc.

How homes are matched to volunteers
Based on what repairs are needed, we match the skill set of the volunteers to the repairs. We discuss with the volunteer(s) prior to the event what is required to complete the repair and discuss possible time frame to complete the repair(s). Other than paint roller cages, roller covers and brushes, volunteers will be required to bring their own tools for their projects.

Event Day
The Repair Affair is an annual event that is tentatively scheduled annually on the third Saturday of May. The next event is scheduled for May 20, 2023.

The 2022 event was another huge success thanks to the Ashland community supplying volunteers and local businesses sponsoring the event by providing discounted or donated materials. A special thanks to the Board of City Commissioners for their support of this event since its inception in 2001.

On Event Day, the volunteers will meet at the central concession stand in Central Park at 7:30 am for a brief review of the day’s activities and for coffee and a quick breakfast. Teams will also check-in and receive their free shirts and the Repair Affair staff will be available for any last-minute questions. This is a time when volunteers meet other teams and see the diversity of Repair Affair's great volunteers. Lunch is also provided at the concession stand the day of the event.
